APRIL CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH
OPENS A SYMBOL OF HOPE
Give the light ofhope
to a child.
Every first Thursday of April, CASA of Hidalgo County, Inc.
together with Child Protective Service holds a vigil as part of a national
movement to bring attention to the plight of abused and neglected children
by lighting a tree as a symbol of hope for those children who are
currently under the jurisdiction of the county child protection court.
Hundreds of members of the community and volunteers gather to Light a Light of Hope one
light represents each child who has been identified as abused and
neglected in our community. Hidalgo County joined hearts with others
across the nation to commemorate all
the children who are victims of abuse and neglect, and continue to wait in
the courts system for a safe, permanent home. This national event is to
benefit abused and neglected children across the
nation and those in our community who currently are under the jurisdiction
of the county dependency courts. In the year 2002,
there were eleven child abuse related
fatalities in Hidalgo County.
